Pixelmator reveals it’s being acquired by Apple. While the picture modifying platform may not have a clear vision for what life would be like under its umbrella, it has made it explicit that there will be “no material changes” to its Pixelmator Professional, Pixelmator for iOS, and Photomator apps – at least for the time being.
Apple’s track record of acquisitions suggests that Pixelmator’s independence might be short-lived, with its features integrated swiftly into the Photos app. Pixelmator is currently available for iOS, macOS, iPadOS, and watchOS, but not yet for the Android platform. I don’t envision that last detail changing anytime soon.
Founded in 2007 in Vilnius, Lithuania’s capital city, the image manipulation pioneer has remained a stalwart presence in the industry for over a decade.
Looking back, it’s remarkable how a small group of dedicated individuals has managed to achieve so much over time in Vilnius, Lithuania, considering their humble beginnings. “Now, with this new capability, we’ll have the freedom to reach a significantly broader audience and positively impact the careers of creative individuals globally.”
While the deal remains subject to regulatory approval, Apple’s growing assertiveness in incorporating AI into its imaging applications has sparked considerable interest. The company has recently introduced Clear Up as a feature in a recent iOS update. Following Apple’s reveal of a new AI-powered feature that removes parts from images, industry analysts quickly identified the tool as the company’s response to Google’s innovative Magic Eraser technology.
Apple declined to comment on the matter.
