UPDATE
Apple and 4-H are partnering to bring cutting-edge tech expertise to a new generation of learners.
Since its inception over a century ago, the 4-H name has long been synonymous with images of youngsters exhibiting livestock, perfecting cooking techniques, or mastering sewing skills – and people-centric activities remain a vital component of the organization that has effectively supported and educated young Americans for generations. At the Franklin County Fairgrounds in Columbus, Ohio, 4-H members showcased their prized livestock and intricately stitched quilts, but upon closer examination, subtle hints of something innovative and perhaps remarkable began to emerge.
Outside the 4-H’s state-of-the-art mobile classroom, parked midway along the honest’s route, young minds were abuzz as they utilized iPads to steer Sphero robots across the pavement, while within the bus, pupils honed their coding skills with Swift and crafted melodies using GarageBand.
On the outskirts of the property, 15-year-old Calum Williams prepared to showcase one of the numerous geese he had successfully reared, referencing detailed notes on his iPad.
Williams notes that 4-H’s inclusivity has made a positive impact. While 4-H is often associated with agriculture and traditional skills, it also offers a wide range of projects that integrate STEM concepts, providing opportunities for exploration regardless of interest or background. While 4-H has undergone significant changes, its evolution continues unabated.
With a presence spanning across all counties and parishes in the United States, the 4-H program effectively reaches over 6 million young people annually, solidifying its position as a vital youth development organization. The organization is intrinsically linked to land-grant universities, established in the latter half of the 19th century to broaden access to higher education, with a focus on agriculture and engineering disciplines.
Recently, 4-H has broadened its scope by incorporating more comprehensive learning experiences, partly thanks to the support of Apple and its Community Education Initiative. Apple’s Everyone Can Code initiative has empowered tens of thousands of students across 99 countries and regions, as well as all 50 US states, since its launch in 2019, prioritizing historically underrepresented groups in tech by providing coding, creativity, and professional development opportunities. As part of Apple’s commitment to education and academic equity, spanning over four decades.
Apple’s collaboration with one of America’s most revered community programs began in Ohio alongside The Ohio State University, providing cutting-edge hardware, financial support, scholarships, educator resources, and access to Apple experts. The partnership has flourished significantly since its initial formation in Ohio. Between 2019 and spring 2024, Apple-supported 4-H packages successfully reached hundreds of educators and more than 90,000 young people across Ohio, New Jersey, Michigan, and Florida, including through programming at Historically Black Colleges and Universities. By the end of this summer, nearly 8,000 additional college students may be enrolled in the program, as expansions are underway in Illinois, Kentucky, and Idaho. Programming in North Carolina is set to launch this fall in partnership with North Carolina State University.
Jobie Thinithapathai, 12, has been an active member of the 4-H program for four years. At last year’s Franklin County Fair, alongside showcasing the pig and rabbits she had reared, she made her debut visit to the 4-H mobile classroom bus. The school bus features iPad-equipped learning stations where students can explore innovative activities in robotics, coding, music creation, and artistic expression.
According to Thinthapthai, her experience was surprisingly enjoyable, with a notable fondness for collaborating with robots and utilizing an iPad for creative purposes; in her future aspirations, she aims to become a healthcare provider. As medical advancements continuously evolve with expertise, understanding these developments can ultimately benefit my future by enhancing knowledge and decision-making capabilities. As it turns out, our experience with 4-H not only provides us with additional tools for our projects but also equips us with valuable skills that can be applied later in life.
Mark Mild, a seasoned educator, spearheads the 4-H program, expertly guiding students through engaging experiences aboard the iconic 4-H bus. Before pursuing a career as a civil engineer, he started out as a 4-H member, leading STEM initiatives in Ohio.
According to Mild, who participated in 4-H as a teenager, our state has expanded its scope by introducing 200 distinct mission areas catering to youth discovery, with only about 10 percent focused on livestock or agriculture-related activities. “Within the realm of 4-H, expertise plays a substantial role; it’s often the catalyst that ignites young learners’ passion for acquiring new skills, as witnessed when children first encounter an iPad or Apple Pencil on the bus.” As educators now encourage students to explore complex concepts, parents are delighted to see kids engrossed in learning, with no need for departure from the bus because their curiosity is piqued.
In 2021, Apple began collaborating with Rutgers University’s Newark campus and 4-H to support the 4-H PC Science Pathways initiative through golf equipment donations. The system leverages the expertise of peer mentors from schools and high schools to engage with younger individuals and foster skill development in STEM fields.
With the combined power of this program and Apple’s expertise, young people are inspired to pursue STEM fields because of the tangible hands-on experience they receive, notes Rodrigo Sanchez Hernandez, a mechanical engineer turned 4-H programmer in New Jersey who can attest firsthand to its effectiveness. When people witness someone similar to themselves, roughly the same age, excel in a particular field, they’re inspired to learn from that individual’s approach; they rationalize that if someone like them has achieved success, they too can achieve it.
Since 2021, the system has been expanded to include 4-H golf equipment throughout the entire state, as well as offering this summer’s STEM Explorers camp in Trenton. Throughout the month, a significant number of college students in grades 7 through 9 participated in iPad-based workshops that covered a range of topics, including digital media, robotics, coding, and engineering. At the Digital Media Week, students engaged in a hands-on learning lab inspired by Apple’s Everybody Can Create curriculum, ultimately crafting their own projects to raise awareness about pressing environmental issues.
Apple collaborates with Michigan State University and 4-H to empower young individuals in the Detroit area and across Michigan’s Tribal Nations and communities by providing opportunities to explore career paths in technical and creative fields. This past summer, nearly 80 young individuals, many of whom have ties to a tribal nation, participated in a 4-H camp situated within the Hiawatha National Forest, where they leveraged iPads and Apple Pencils to develop Keynote presentations on building robotics.
The judging process for Calum Williams’ duck has finally concluded at the Franklin County Truthful. For several months, he meticulously documented the transformation of his duckling, meticulously recording its changing weight and capturing images with his iPad’s digital camera from the moment it hatched.
Once all competitors had presented their entries, the judges announced the results. As Calum claimed second place, a beaming smile lit up his face, and his eyes sparkled with pride; however, the one person who seemed even more thrilled than he did was his proud mother, Danielle Moeller Williams.
Moeller Williams’ upbringing in the 4-H program serves as the inspiration for her son’s subsequent membership.
“After starting, I noticed a significant increase in the number of initiatives available,” states Moeller Williams. “With advancements in technology and educational tools, there’s an unprecedented array of opportunities for kids to engage and learn.” The 4-H program has enabled Calum to effectively leverage his skills to plan for his future, and I am thoroughly delighted with the progress he has made in becoming a more mature individual.
