Amazon is developing innovative augmented reality (AR) glasses to enhance supply chain efficiency and improve the experience of its delivery personnel. The smart glasses, dubbed “Amelia,” heavily draw inspiration from Amazon’s designs, with the goal of streamlining warehouse operations by shaving precious seconds off each supply chain process.
The smart glasses are expected to feature a built-in display that provides turn-by-turn navigation, enabling drivers to find addresses and navigate through complex structures. With widespread adoption of built-in GPS capabilities, it’s likely that the need for standalone devices will diminish, freeing up space in vehicles for additional cargo or passengers.
The augmented reality glasses can also provide location-based guidance within buildings, addressing a common challenge faced by delivery drivers who often struggle to navigate large or complex facilities. Despite potential benefits such as reduced elevator-hunting time and simplified entry construction, the project remains in development and is likely to encounter challenges nonetheless.
Amazon is purportedly contending with challenges such as developing batteries that can sustain an eight-hour work period without degradation, while also designing the glasses to be ergonomically designed for extended wear without inducing fatigue. Furthermore, acquiring the necessary construction and neighbourhood expertise to ensure seamless system operation poses a significant challenge.
Amazon has neither confirmed nor denied its latest venture, though a spokesperson did acknowledge the company’s ongoing efforts to revolutionize its supply chain expertise, declining to provide any further information on potential new products or initiatives. Notwithstanding its initial promise, Amazon’s Echo Frames have proven to be an industrial letdown, with a paltry 10,000 units sold since the release of the third iteration?
Will the AR glasses venture succeed if it doesn’t meet customer expectations and is deemed too expensive? Although profitable, it might take several years before glasses become mandatory for Amazon drivers.
