Activision’s legal team has taken action to shut down a popular Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 (MW2) multiplayer mod, citing copyright infringement. The mod, known as Project Redwood, aimed to revamp the game’s multiplayer experience with new features and gameplay mechanics. However, it appears that Activision’s lawyers have deemed the project infringes on their intellectual property rights?

Activision Publishing has abruptly shut down an extremely anticipated mod aiming to recapture the multiplayer essence of its 2009 flagship title, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. The H2 Multiplayer mod, slated for release on August 16, 2024, was abruptly halted when the development team received a stop-and-desist letter from Activision just one day prior to its intended launch.

The Half-Life 2: Multiplayer (H2M) mod was designed to utilize the PC version of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Remastered. H2M deliberately set out to create a gameplay experience that rivalled a full-fledged game or DLC. Gaming enthusiasts will gain access to the entire map roster from Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 (2009) and Modern Warfare: Reflex’s multiplayer modes, in addition to a revamped take on MW2’s prestige system and other exciting features.

The pleasure derived from playing Call of Duty: Black Ops IIII (H2M mod) has yielded substantial revenue gains for Activision, a testament to its enduring popularity. According to Steam charts, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Remastered achieved its all-time high on Steam when it was released in 2017. Notably, between August 5 and 14, the title enjoyed a 50% discount, ranking third among Steam’s top sellers during that period.

Not particularly surprising for Activision. The writer’s impressive victory over SM2 was sealed with a decisive dot.
