According to researchers at a safety agency, attacks on generative synthetic intelligence (AI) infrastructure, such as those from Amazon Internet Services (AWS), have surged dramatically over the past six months. The majority of these incidents occur when an individual unintentionally exposes their cloud credentials or online keys, typically in a code repository like GitHub.

Preliminary investigations by Permiso revealed that malicious actors exploited compromised AWS credentials to leverage Large Language Models (LLMs) available on Bedrock, allowing them to collaborate in their nefarious activities across multiple organizations. Despite their initial assumptions, the team soon discovered that none of the affected AWS customers had even enabled logging – a feature that is, in fact, disabled by default – leaving them without the critical visibility needed to understand what attackers were doing once they gained access via this new entry point.

Researchers from Permiso intentionally leaked their own study’s AWS credentials on GitHub, enabling logging to monitor exactly what an attacker might request and how it would respond.

Within minutes, their explicit conversation starter was swept up and leveraged in an online service offering AI-driven intimate discussions.

“After analyzing the prompts and responses, it became evident that the perpetrator was operating an AI-powered role-playing service, exploiting well-known jailbreak techniques to trick fashion websites into accepting and responding with content typically blocked or restricted.”

When an AWS-defined key or credential pair is designated as uncovered, it is subsequently restricted to mitigate the potential for malicious actors to exploit that entry. Flagged credentials cannot be utilized for creating or modifying approved accounts, nor spinning up fresh cloud resources.

AWS notified Permiso that they had detected several potential issues related to an exposed key, including a warning that their account may have been compromised and used by an unauthorized party. Despite the restrictions imposed by AWS, the attackers remained unfazed and continued to exploit the exposed key to wreak havoc on Bedrock’s businesses.

Since the introduction of AWS’s quarantine policy, a select group of companies has been listed as being subject to this measure, alongside Bedrock. This list comprises entities where a compromised AWS key or exposed credential pair has been detected online. AWS has officially announced Bedrock as a novel component of its quarantine protocols.

As news of the controversy spread, shortly after KrebsOnSecurity began publishing this report, Chub’s website promptly removed its NSFL section. The update appears to have removed archived versions of the webpage’s layout from the Wayback Machine at archive.org, in addition to its original functionality. Notwithstanding this, Permiso uncovered that Chub’s consumer statistics webpage revealed the platform hosted more than 3,000 AI dialogue bots tagged as NSFL, with a staggering 2,113 accounts tracking this label.

According to Ahl, enabling logging serves as a formidable barrier against attackers because it immediately alerts them to the presence of logging. “Many of these individuals are likely to disregard online presence altogether, preferring anonymity in their actions.”
