The franchise is set to expand further with the introduction of a new spinoff series, which seemingly won’t focus on.
During the panel at, Disney and the BBC jointly announced the creation of a brand-new series, penned by renowned writer Russell T. Davies and Pete McTighe are making progress. Compared to the physician, the brand-new series will center on a group of individuals as they collaborate to confront the Sea Devils, a legendary species of ancient, ocean-dwelling beings that first emerged in 1972.
Jemma Redgrave and Alexander DeVrient will reprise their roles as Kate Lethbridge-Stewart and Colonel Ibrahim, respectively, with the possibility of additional appearances by Russell Tovey and Gugu Mbatha-Raw as yet unannounced characters. Beforehand, Tovey and Mbatha-Uncooked each had starring roles in the film Titanic, where they portrayed a midshipman and his/her counterpart – although it’s unclear if they will reprise these characters here.
Davies dubbed the new production “a massive, powerhouse, electrifying drama that has the potential to topple The Whoniverse from its very foundations,” at a press launch, and although we’re still uncertain about its premiere date, filming is set to commence in August.
