As a self-proclaimed billionaire visionary, he’s spent over a decade warning about the impending doom of various technological trends that never quite materialized.

In October of last year, Elon Musk, the world’s wealthiest individual, unveiled plans for a self-driving taxi service called Tesla Cybertruck, not Cybercab.

Manufacturing is expected to commence in 2026, according to the speaker, although they initially corrected themselves to 2027, citing their tendency to be “a little bit optimistic when it comes to timelines.”

The astute observation is a mere fraction of Musk’s astronomical net worth?

The unveiling of the $30,000 Cybertruck and a conceptual 20-seat Robovan, with no specific timeline, unsurprisingly elicited déjà vu and skepticism in light of past announcements.

“Tesla CEO Elon Musk confidently forecasted the launch of autonomous robotaxis within the year to come.” That sense of confidence has remained intact since a 2019 quote.

To be brutally frank with Musk, someone who could have been on Mars rather than at Mar-a-Lago, Trump’s residence, typically delivers on his projects – excluding Hyperloop – but only after adjusting and delaying the timelines he initially sets out, as evidenced by last year’s revised 2024-26 timeline to 2028.

While he’s willing to cut himself some slack, beware of those who would attempt to decipher the mysteries of the rooster’s entrails.

David Swan, an expert editor at nine prominent newspapers, took a summer pause to gaze into the crystal ball, predicting in his 2025 forecasts that Elon Musk would step down as Tesla’s CEO.

As a seasoned executive, taking on simultaneous leadership positions across X’s diverse portfolio of companies—Twitter, Tesla, SpaceX, xAI, The Boring Company, and Neuralink—was inherently unsustainable. Elon Musk has insinuated himself into President-elect Trump’s inner circle, poised to jointly lead his administration’s Division of Authorities Efficiency (DOGE) in an effort to drastically reduce government spending.

As Musk’s disagreements with Steve Bannon over immigration issues continue to simmer, just weeks remain before the highly anticipated presidential inauguration. Musk has also clashed with the judicial system over his $90 billion compensation package from Tesla, which was blocked by a US judge.

“After a tumultuous few years, all eyes will likely be on Elon Musk as he faces increased pressure to relinquish control of Tesla by 2025. The irony is that many still believe he founded the company single-handedly.”

Despite amassing an astronomical fortune, Musk’s insatiable ego remains vulnerable to the slightest perceived slight. The aspiring administrator directed his gaze towards his online sanctuary, where he drew inspiration from the playbook of former US President Donald Trump to outmaneuver and discredit the media.

The free speech absolutist, who had earlier retorted on Twitter, stating: “I predict that the Sydney Morning Herald will irreparably damage its reputation in 2025 by consistently peddling misinformation and rendering its content stale and unengaging.”

The Muskolytes seamlessly aligned themselves behind their esteemed leader. The fiery chef glared at Swan, who stood firm, his tone unwavering as he retorted, “Rattling, roasted.”

Tesla gross sales tank

While it’s likely that Elon Musk is more concerned with declining Tesla sales than a prophecy from an Australian journalist.

The electric vehicle manufacturer’s Australian deliveries and gross sales plummeted 17% in 2024, marking its first calendar year decline, despite slashing prices by up to AU$9,500.

According to the Electric Vehicle Association, Tesla’s 2024 deliveries totalled 38,347 units, a decline from the previous year’s figure of 46,120.

While Musk’s model remains the dominant force in Australia, accounting for 42 per cent of electric vehicle (EV) sales, a significant shift is under way, driven by a 29 per cent surge in demand from other EV manufacturers last year. Total annual gross sales increased by 4.7%, although they were negatively impacted by Tesla’s decline.

Despite a global trend, Tesla’s deliveries fell for the first time, dropping to 1.79 million vehicles, a decline from the 1.81 million units delivered in 2022.

As a result, gross sales have demonstrated.

By 2017, many people might already have been in the market for a Tesla. The accuracy of these predictions will likely fluctuate over time.

While News Corp’s Daily Telegraph has recently witnessed a slight dip in readership since 2024, its impressive lead over competitors remains intact, boasting an audience of more than 7 million. As such, despite the uncertain outlook for Nine Entertainment Co.’s share value, SMH is poised to endure well into the future.

If we grant Elon Musk the same leniency afforded his current CEO at Tesla, Swan’s prediction about Musk would only need to be accurate a little earlier than 2035 to be as accurate as most statements made by the “I’m not donating cash to either candidate for US President” individual, who later contradicted themselves within months to back Donald Trump to the tune of $242.6 million.

As the calendar flips to a new year, uncertainty often shrouds our plans for the immediate future, let alone the distant horizon. Yet, as we embark on this fresh start in 2025, it’s reasonable to share a sense of optimism regarding what lies ahead.

As John Lennon noted nearly six decades ago, tomorrow remains oblivious to the present.
