According to renowned Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, Apple is poised to expand its usage of digital camera sensors for future iPhone models, potentially shifting away from a sole reliance on Sony as a supplier. Currently, Sony enjoys a monopoly on providing digital camera sensors to Apple, but this exclusivity appears poised to expire in two years’ time.
Kuo predicts that Apple will source sensors from Samsung for its forthcoming iPhone 18 model, expected to debut in autumn 2026. Particularly, we’re discussing a pair of 48 MP 1/2.6-inch sensors designed specifically for use in ultrawide cameras.
According to reports, Samsung has assembled a dedicated team to cater to Apple’s demands, with whispers suggesting a potential contract may have already been sealed, though this remains unconfirmed, pending further disclosure from Kuo.
Without providing further clarification on whether this modification will yield a discernible enhancement to the image quality of the iPhone’s built-in camera in the 18th series relative to its antecedents, it remains uncertain what tangible benefits this change may bring.
