The Experimental Aircraft Association’s (EAA) AirVenture Oshkosh, a premier event in aviation, is set to return to Wisconsin for another installment of the world’s largest airshow. Now in its 71st year, the mega occasion takes place from July 22 through July 28. While historically focused on experimental aircraft, EAA AirVenture has increasingly shifted its attention to drones over the years.

Since EAA AirVenture started recognizing drones in 2015, In 2022, the company unveiled a revolutionary Aviation Gateway Park, boasting an impressive 80-by-80-by-30-foot drone enclosure that set a new standard in innovation.

In 2016, I undertook a personal project to explore my own creative potential. By then, the Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA) had dedicated its own tent and outdoor demonstration area specifically for drones. I was personally invested in its success, having hosted a seminar that brought non-drone pilots up to speed on the latest developments in the drone industry. At the event, the drone presence was notable, particularly with an Amazon Prime Air supply drone on display. Some humans riding on drones caught a glimpse.

Since its inaugural appearance nearly a decade ago at EAA, the drone has garnered widespread attention. This year, EAA 2024 promises to deliver an abundance of exciting opportunities for drone pilots. As thousands of aviation enthusiasts converge on Oshkosh, Wisconsin for the iconic EAA AirVenture 2024, drone pilots can rely on a unique experience that combines cutting-edge technology with a rich aviation heritage.

The present features 500 drones that, when combined, are capable of generating over 4 billion unique shade combinations and flying in intricately choreographed patterns, perfectly synced with a selected musical score.

As part of their commitment to innovation and community engagement, Starlight has decided to donate a cutting-edge, state-of-the-art telescope system to the European Astronomical Association. Wing, the sister company of Google responsible for drone delivery operations, is conducting precise demonstrations. Drones are scheduled to take flight over the Academy of Mannequin Aeronautics’ designated flying zone, located at Pioneer Field, at precisely 6:05 p.m. On July 23rd, 25th, and 26th.

AirVenture 2024 UAS4STEM challenge

Now in its fourth year, a relatively unknown initiative called UAS4STEM is focused on engaging youth. The culmination of a year-long competition among college-bound students, spanning from middle school to high school graduation. Over the previous yr, U.S. Across the country, college students have been engaged in a spirited competition where they form groups to design, construct, and then successfully pilot these cutting-edge drones. Ten of the top competitors from previous years’ events have received invitations to participate in AirVenture 2024, marking a prestigious milestone in their aviation careers.

For in-person competitors, college students will arrive at the southwestern corner of Camp Scholler early in the week. Groups are divided into two categories: novice and advanced, primarily based on age and skill level.

At EAA’s in-person flight event, participating groups are expected to tackle a specific and demanding mission. With the plan in place, they will need to gather the necessary equipment and build a drone, requiring the integration of autopilot software.

The winners will receive a scholarship award in the form of cash and gain access to cutting-edge Skydio technology tools.

The recreational flying area will be open on the following days and hours:

  •  6:30 p.m. – 8:30 p.m.
  •  6:30 p.m. – 8:00 p.m.
