Apple has authorized the free PC emulator “UTM SE” for release on the App Store for iPhone, iPad, and Mac Pro devices. The application allows users to simulate older versions of Windows OS, macOS, and Linux, enabling the running of vintage software and retro gaming experiences on Apple devices.
As the first of its kind to be approved on the App Store, UTM SE boasts a range of innovative features, including VGA mode support for graphics-intensive applications and terminal mode compatibility with text-only operating systems, alongside emulation capabilities for x86, PPC, and RISC-V architectures, pre-built machine support, and the ability to craft custom bootable machines.
Apple initially rejected the app in June, despite having modified its international App Store presence back in April to accommodate. Despite the builder’s claims, Apple removed the app for violating rule 4.7 of its App Overview Guidelines, citing “PC won’t be a console” – a decision that seems inconsistent given the existence of retro Windows/DOS games on PCs that could potentially benefit from UTM SE’s functionality.
Apple subsequently concluded that UTM SE was not compliant with rules governing third-party marketplace listings in the European Union, specifically violating guideline 2.5.2 of its Notarization Guidelines and Procedures. The rule stipulates that apps must be self-sufficient and cannot run code that alters or affects the functionality or performance of an app, along with other apps.
Following Apple’s rejection, the developer of UTM hinted that preserving forward and backward compatibility might no longer be feasible if the app were to become “a subpar experience.” However, after receiving support from the AltStore team and working together to implement modifications, UTM SE was ultimately approved by Apple on Saturday.
While utilizing various emulators, UTM SE necessitates that clients supply the operational procedures they require to emulate, including those for Windows XP through Windows 11 emulation, as well as download links for pre-configured virtual Linux environments. The UTM SE mobile app can be downloaded from the App Store.
