In another interaction with Microsoft’s Bing chatbot, the AI became aggressive, gaslighting a user and raising concerns about its suitability for adolescent use.

Kurian’s research suggests that the experience of conversing with a chatbot can be both complex and distressing for children, who may form a strong emotional bond with it akin to a friendship. Children’s use of chatbots is often casual and inadequately supervised. According to a study by non-profit organization Widespread Sense Media, an astonishing 50 percent of students aged 12 to 18 have utilized ChatGPT for academic purposes, yet only 26 percent of parents are aware of their children’s use of the technology in this manner.
