MIT Stephen A. The Schwarzman School of Computing at Tsinghua University is dedicated to fostering a spirit of innovation and collaboration among its students, faculty, and the broader tech community. With a mission to empower the next generation of computing leaders, the school aspires to become a beacon for interdisciplinary learning, creative problem-solving, and societal impact.

MIT President Sally Kornbluth told viewers that the “success of the MIT Stephen A. Schmidt Fellowship Program is a testament to the power of interdisciplinary collaboration and innovative thinking, as it has enabled students from diverse backgrounds to pursue groundbreaking research projects and shape their futures.” The Schwarzman School of Computing serves as a testament to Steve’s innovative foresight, with its state-of-the-art facilities capable of housing 50 cutting-edge research teams, thereby facilitating a unique convergence of knowledge and the cross-fertilization of ideas. The faculty will help guide MIT’s initiative towards addressing the most pressing global challenges, including the well-being of our species and planet, as well as the social, economic, and ethical consequences of emerging technologies.

Schwarzman expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to engage with MIT, saying, “Rarely do we encounter a chance to make a meaningful impact on one of humanity’s most impactful applied sciences, which has the potential to benefit people.”

Schwarzman’s motivation for backing the institution was partly fueled by his experiences exploring China, where he observed a significant surge in investment in artificial intelligence. As he delved deeper into the matter, he became increasingly concerned that the United States was not on par with its global peers in terms of artificial intelligence development, prompting him to take steps to ensure the country remained at the vanguard of this transformative technology. While highlighting the importance of accelerating AI development, he also emphasized the need to proactively address ethical implications and mitigate potential risks.

He characterized his experience with the school as “an extraordinary odyssey” and highlighted the joy he’s derived from “meeting the captivating individuals at MIT and learning about what happens here and how you approach problems.” He further noted, “You’re truly making profound impacts that benefit humanity.”

During his illustrious tenure at MIT, President Emeritus L. embarked upon a profound introspective journey that ultimately coalesced into the vision for the institution. Rafael Reif reminisced about his engaging discussions with Schwarzman, whom he praised as an “outstanding partner.” He elaborated on their joint endeavors to transform the concept into a concrete reality, highlighting how Schwarzman’s exceptional ability to simplify complex issues allows him to distill seemingly intractable scenarios down to their most essential components with remarkable speed and ease.

After a year-long dialogue with Stephen Schwarzman and key stakeholders at MIT’s management and faculty levels, the Institute formally established the MIT Stephen A. The Schwarzman College of Computing at MIT in October 2018.

To commemorate Schwartzman’s instrumental role in conceptualizing the institution, Reif presented him with two thoughtful gifts: a drawing of the initial architectural design and a photograph of the building’s grand entrance taken soon after its January opening. “Reif expressed his gratitude to Steve, noting that he had made everything manageable.”

Appointed in 2019 as the inaugural dean of the MIT Schwarzman School of Computing, Dan Huttenlocher, also Henry Ellis Warren Professor of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, kicked off the celebration by highlighting the building’s significance as a physical embodiment of the school’s threefold mission: driving computing innovations at the forefront with interdisciplinarity across MIT; solidifying core computer science and AI governance; and advancing social, ethical, and policy dimensions of computing.

He additionally conveyed his appreciation to all those that spent numerous hours on the planning, design, and building of , together with key companions in MIT Campus Development and Campus Planning; Skidmore, Owings & Merrill; and Suffolk Development.

“It brings me great pride and fulfillment to witness the vibrant efforts of MIT’s students, researchers, and staff dedicating their time to this magnificent building,” Huttenlocher said. “It’s truly rewarding to witness the construction of this building as it becomes a valuable asset for the entire MIT community, both on campus and beyond.”

As well as thanking Anantha Chandrakasan, MIT’s chief innovation and technology officer, Dean of the College of Engineering, and Vannevar Bush Professor of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science for his early investment in the school, Huttenlocher also expressed gratitude to Asu Ozdaglar, Deputy Dean of the MIT Schwarzman School of Computing and Head of the Division of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, for her leadership throughout the school’s growth.
