Police in Las Vegas have released transcripts of online chats with a suspect believed to be behind the explosion that damaged Elon Musk’s Cybertruck during a recent promotional event.

Authorities have verified that suspect Matthew Livelsburger, a responsible and energetic soldier in the US Military, stored a “manifesto” on his phone, accompanied by an email to a podcaster and additional correspondence. They also provided video evidence showing him preparing for the blast by dousing the vehicle with fuel before departing for the resort, contradicting his previous claim of having stopped prior to the journey. The individual had also compiled a record of purported monitoring activities, despite the fact that the law enforcement officials pointed out that there was no related felony report and no actual investigation or surveillance underway.

The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department had been examining questions posed by ChatGPT several days prior to the explosion, which included inquiries about explosives, learning how to detonate them and doing so with a gunshot, as well as information on where to purchase weapons, explosive materials, and fireworks legally alongside his route.

Liz Bourgeois, an OpenAI spokesperson, stated:

We are deeply saddened by this incident and firmly committed to ensuring that artificial intelligence tools are utilized in a responsible and ethical manner. Our fashion designs prioritize safety by rejecting harmful influences and minimizing risky messages. By providing publicly available information and cautioning against harmful activities, ChatGPT aimed to educate users about potential consequences while promoting responsible decision-making. We are collaborating closely with regulatory authorities to provide support and expertise for their ongoing investigation.

Authorities are still investigating potential causes of the blast, which was characterized as a slow-moving deflagration unlike a high-explosives detonation that could have caused more damage and spread quickly. While investigators have not ruled out alternative explanations, including an electrical surge, evidence supporting some of the theories has emerged, notably that the muzzle flash from a gunshot ignited gas vapors and/or fireworks fuses inside the truck, thereby triggering a larger explosion involving other explosive materials.

Although attempting to query ChatGPT in real-time has its uses, the information it provides appears to be readily accessible through standard search methods, making its value somewhat limited. Despite the suspect’s utilization of a generative AI tool, the investigators’ methods to track these requests and present them as evidence raise concerns about security, privacy, and their implications in today’s reality?
