HONG KONG (AP) — Thousands of people gathered in Hong Kong on Saturday to witness the city’s debut pyrotechnics drone display, as part of an innovative marketing campaign to boost awareness and support for panda conservation efforts.

Ten minutes of aerial spectacle unfolded as 1,000 drones took to the skies above Hong Kong’s iconic Victoria Harbour, some 50 specially equipped with fireworks that lit up the night, forming majestic images of the city’s beloved giant pandas.

As part of the dazzling display, select drones unleashed bursts of colorful fireworks, while numerous others collaborated to create a stunning, slow-moving three-dimensional image of a panda suspended high in the sky.

Keen enthusiasts arrived at dawn, eager to secure prime vantage points for an unobstructed view of the upcoming spectacle.

Hong Kong’s tourism prospects received a boost when Eddie Chow, a devoted father, shared a unique experience with his two children – introducing them to the world of drones.

“I thoroughly enjoyed the unique fusion of fireworks and drones, a rare and captivating theme; I think Hong Kong should host more events like this,” said Chow, noting it was his first experience witnessing a drone display.

Several onlookers, including 20-something Hong Kong resident Jodi Hung, commended the drone display as “nice”.

“When discussing the drone’s design, Hung praised its creators for their innovative approach, saying that their blend of artistry and methodology was truly outstanding.”

Following the gift of two giant pandas, An An and Ke Ke, from Beijing to Hong Kong, the city has unveiled a series of events across town, including exhibitions and a panda-themed carnival, in a celebration that showcases the region’s unique cultural exchange. The introduction of the new pair brings the total number of giant pandas residing at Hong Kong’s Ocean Park, a unique theme park combining thrill rides with wildlife exhibits, to six – all of which are housed within its premises.
