Is this the kind of robot that stands out the moment you lay eyes on it? Its unique and deceptively simple design sets it apart from other autonomous cell robots currently available in the market. Developed by the Fraunhofer Institute for Materials Circulation and Logistics, this robotic system features a unique design comprising two wheels and gripper arms. As you gaze directly upon it, sans any payload, the robot appears to be nothing more than an arch with wheels attached to its rear.
The robot employs its arms to securely grasp cargo containers by applying pressure from multiple angles, thereby ensuring stability as it rapidly navigates through airports. The device maintains its stability through a dynamic equilibrium system inspired by the principles of an inverted pendulum, where no external counterbalance is employed. Its exceptional ability to maintain stability enables it to navigate a wide range of diverse and irregular terrain with ease.
The evoBOT is capable of reaching a maximum speed of up to 60 kph (37.2 mph), while its payload capacity reaches as much as 100 kg (220.4 lbs). With advanced capabilities to handle hazardous materials, efficiently transport packages over extended routes, and alleviate strain on employees through automated lifting and overhead tasks. The company can also procure supplies and provide assistance during the loading and unloading of an aircraft.
Last year, the evoBOT completed its first test run at the Munich Airport. There, it conducted a thorough inspection within the cargo terminal and on the airport’s apron.
The successful outcome of these exams has further demonstrated the adaptability of Fraunhofer IML’s system, positioning it for prospective implementations across multiple sectors. EvoBOT’s innovative design sets it apart from its autonomous mobile robot (AMR) counterparts, empowering it with the capacity to excel further.
