Indonesia’s government recently prohibited the sale and utilization of iPhone 16 models, as well as other Apple products introduced during the current autumn season, including the Apple Watch Series 10, within its territorial boundaries. The government imposed this ban to ensure Apple meets its financial obligations and maintains a stable economy in the country. Apple reportedly committed to investing $109 million USD (approximately 1.71 trillion rupiah) in Indonesia’s infrastructure and local sourcing initiatives, but has so far delivered only about $95 million USD (around 1.48 trillion rupiah), falling short of its original pledge.
Indonesia’s Ministry of Business has been unable to issue the necessary International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI) certifications due to Apple’s $14 million ($230 billion rupiah) shortfall, hindering the sale of iPhone units in the country. Minister Kartasasmita additionally commented:
As a condition of approving permits for the iPhone 16, our ministry requires Apple to meet outstanding commitments and obligations.
As a direct consequence of the Indonesian government’s policy mandating a 40% local content requirement for foreign companies operating within the country, significant investments have flowed into Indonesia. Apple pledged to establish a network of nationwide institutes, dubbed Apple Academies, offering in-depth analytical and improvement initiatives.
