T-Cell’s CEO emphasizes a customer-centric approach: genuinely caring about your experience, exceeding your expectations, and requesting minimal effort in return.

By 2015, the company had grown to become the third-largest service provider in the US, and just a few years later, following its acquisition of Dash in 2020, it further solidified its position, rising to become the second-largest player in the market. It was a combination of factors that contributed to our growth and dominance in the telecom industry. It was a series of daring 5G strikes, and as expected, the management that responded. In a recent podcast episode, host Diane Brady engaged in a thought-provoking conversation with Mike Sievert, President and CEO of T-Mobile, as he reflected on the company’s heritage, passion for innovation, and key takeaways from his predecessor John Legere – “Uncarrier” being just one example.

While some clients may not perceive T-Mobile as a superhero, CEO Sievert emphasizes that the company still retains its identity as an “uncarrier” – bucking conventional industry norms in response. The company has significantly enhanced its value proposition over the past five years by not only consistently delivering superior value but also offering the finest network, coupled with exceptional service and technology.

According to Sievert, his company currently boasts triple the speed and capacity of its competitors, attributing this advantage to outpacing rivals in the 5G space by focusing heavily on the mid-band spectrum. The gap between our rivals is relatively small, likely to persist for an extended period.
The CEO also discussed the company’s interest in providing fibre-optic internet services to customers. The corporation has now become the fifth-largest provider of home broadband services. As its 5G web business continues to expand rapidly, the company wants to diversify by incorporating fiber into its offerings, which it has already begun to do through strategic partnerships and investments.
Sivert highlighted Legere’s unique approach to leadership and the meticulous succession planning process that allowed him to seamlessly transition into the CEO role after years of preparation. According to Sievert, Legere instilled in him the importance of actively listening to frontline staff and giving them the autonomy to drive change.

The discussion also touched on the current landscape of the smartphone industry, highlighting a significant shift in the upgrade cycle, which has expanded from approximately 18 months to three years. According to him, individuals are retaining their smartphones for extended periods due to increasing costs and the rapid advancements in phone quality.

The CEO disclosed that many customers opt for their premium products due to perceived value.
Sivert emphasized the company’s commitment to optimize all aspects, from customer service to community development, to stay ahead of the competition and maintain a competitive edge.
