During Northern Strike 24, the Kelly Johnson Joint All-Area Innovation Center effectively showcased a pioneering approach to integrating innovations. A field-fabricated drone demonstrated operational efficiency and effectiveness in delivering critical medical supplies during a live-fire training exercise, exemplifying the concept of “Operationalized Innovation.”
Led by Lt. Col. Bartly “Shrek” Ward, KJJADIC partnered with ARCWERX, the DAF Strategic Research Group, DIU, and CRUX Protection to develop a pioneering technique enabling warfighters to seamlessly collaborate with strategic leaders and program offices to transition innovative solutions into acquisition and sustainment. As the method reached its zenith, 15 combat-tested features were seamlessly integrated into the train, providing a compelling live showcase of cutting-edge innovation.
A highlight of the event was the showcase of Expeditionary Superior Manufacturing, led by Lieutenant Col. Hans “Solo” Jagow, a pioneering innovator who enabled warfighters to sustain themselves autonomously in harsh environments by developing alternative supply chain solutions that didn’t rely on conventional providers or civilian contractors. This “Manufacturing Facility at the Front” was conceived as a self-reliant hub, providing significant value to the Department of Defense in a contested logistics environment?
The train demonstrated the convergence of AI-governed 3D-printable drones, interchangeable sensor modules, and state-of-the-art threat recognition technologies. Despite challenges arising from varying energy levels and material formation in diverse humidity conditions, the team successfully developed and deployed drones at will, thereby verifying the hypotheses proposed by the Transition Schoolhouse group.
One critical outcome was the successful demonstration of a attritable drone delivering a medical payload under simulated combat conditions. The Crux 1 drone successfully executed its objective, demonstrating the feasibility and practicality of on-the-edge fabricated aircraft in realistic scenarios.
The train was hardly exceptional; its true significance lay in the effective synergy between military and commercial forces, fostering swift and effective solutions to pressing concerns. KJJADIC’s initiatives highlight the pivotal role of effective management in seamlessly incorporating innovative solutions into naval capabilities, thereby expeditiously meeting the urgent needs of warfighters.
Looking ahead, the team will move forward by enhancing its capabilities at the 2025 WEPTAC, focusing on developing a seamless transition process to facilitate effective procurement and sustainment.
