Teledyne FLIR’s SIRAS drone brings an end to a high-speed pursuit safely.

In February 2023, Nebraska law enforcement agencies were thrust into a high-stakes situation when they pursued a fugitive wanted by authorities in Colorado. As the suspect’s vehicle came to a halt after being impeded by a spike strip, he hastily abandoned the scene and sought refuge within a dense thicket of tumbleweeds, rendering it challenging for the pursuing deputies to track him down in the midst of the dark night. As the suspect, heavily armed and posing a significant threat, had already opened fire on officers, the sense of urgency surrounding the search intensified.

The Scotts Bluff County Sheriff’s Office was contacted by Sergeant Mark Bliss and his staff to assist in safely locating the suspect. Using their specially equipped Teledyne FLIR SIRAS drone, fitted with thermal imaging technology, authorities were able to quickly locate the suspect and provide real-time information for a prompt resolution.

Teledyne FLIR SIRAS: A Critical Asset for Enhanced Situational Awareness During Nighttime Missions

As a global leader in thermal imaging, Teledyne FLIR is unsurprisingly synonymous with high-performing sensors, as exemplified by its flagship SIRAS system. As subzero temperatures plummeted to below five degrees Fahrenheit, harsh conditions had unfolded. Despite the inclement weather conditions of chilliness and gusting winds, the advanced thermal imaging capabilities on board the SIRAS drone swiftly pinpointed the suspect’s precise location. Sergeant Bliss verified the deceased’s fatal self-inflicted gunshot wound, then directed deputies to the approximately 200-yard distant location.

Although the weeds were unusually dense and lofty, thermal imaging technology surprisingly yielded clear images of the individuals involved. Despite the chaos, Siras proved to be a game-changer, saving us a significant amount of time. The swift response also safeguarded numerous individuals from harm, resolving the crisis within a mere 10-minute timeframe.

Without its thermal capabilities, the drone’s effectiveness in locating the suspect would have been significantly hindered, potentially prolonging the investigation and increasing the risk to law enforcement.

Enhancing Security and Velocity

In rural areas like Scotts Bluff County, law enforcement agencies often lack access to expensive resources like helicopters that larger departments might utilize. The SIRAS drone has proven itself a crucial tool for the Sheriff’s Office, enabling swift and safe responses in situations that would otherwise pose significant risks to personnel.

Without the SIRAS, we would have had to anticipate the SWAT team’s arrival and establish a perimeter. According to Bliss, “We would’ve had to predict when the sun would return, potentially several hours later.” The officers would have subsequently patrolled the area, deliberately positioning themselves to mirror the suspect’s movements.

The drone’s ability to operate in challenging weather conditions has proven valuable in various scenarios, including accident investigations.

Versatility in Legislation Enforcement Operations

Since its inception in 2022, the Scotts Bluff County Sheriff’s Office has leveraged its drone unit to undertake an array of tasks extending far beyond traditional suspect searches. The drone is often utilized to document vehicular accidents, as well as navigate through inclement weather conditions.

Winds of approximately 30 miles per hour swept through the area, accompanied by a relentless downpour that soaked everything in its path. Initially daunted by the prospect of flying, Bliss revealed that a harrowing bike accident investigation with SIRAS had instilled in her a newfound sense of confidence.

The ease of use was a major drawcard for Bliss when using the SIRAS drone, as it didn’t impose geographic restrictions or demand specific login credentials. This rapid deployment capability instills regulatory agencies with confidence that the drone will be operational exactly when needed.

“I’m not willing to risk the safety of our K9 units or personnel; if anything happens to the drone, I’ll simply procure another.” “This innovation unequivocally transforms the recreational experience and amplifies driving pleasure.”

The SIRAS system has proven to be a valuable component of the Scotts Bluff County Sheriff’s Office’s arsenal, providing vital support in both high-pressure situations and everyday operations.
