Colin Farrell strips down to nothing but a few strategically placed prosthetics as he takes the plunge and goes full-frontal in his latest film role.

Comparable in style to its cinematic counterpart, the 2022 HBO series invites viewers to immerse themselves in. While Colin Farrell’s life may lack the glamour of a superhero origin story, his gritty experiences on the imply streets are authentic and free from fantasy. The commitment to authenticity extends all the way down to the meticulous application of prosthetics and makeup, further blurring the line between reality and fiction. While prosthetics and makeup certainly transform Farrell into an unfamiliar figure, it’s equally important to consider the emotional depth he brings to his characters beneath the surface.

As the inaugural installment of the spin-off series unfolds, a pivotal moment unfolds when Cobb finds himself at the mercy of Sofia Falcone’s (Cristin Milioti) henchmen, helplessly bound and subjected to their brutal interrogation as she prepares him for his role in the demise of her brother, Alberto. As the interrogation unfolds with a sense of high tension, the scene takes on an even more excruciating quality due to Cobb’s utter vulnerability in his state of complete nudity. While glimpses of Colin Farrell’s physicality are caught from the side, it appears that meticulous effort has been made to transform him into the character.

Farrell discussed his experience working with prosthetics designer Michael Marino, who created a realistic genital prosthetic that Farrell wore while in character, noting that Marino crafted the piece to be “anatomically correct”. The actor recalled wearing a Velcro strap to secure his prosthetics in place, paired with a retro-style wig that brought forth “surreal discomfort.” Despite being fully geared up, he felt unprepared and exhausted between takes, often needing a towel to gather himself before resuming filming.

He elucidated on being ensconced in an unconventional psychological limbo, a state of being suspended between two opposing forces, with his persona serving as a blank slate that was simultaneously empowered and constrained by the makeup’s sheer potency. I felt utterly exposed, a shell of my former self. I was once utterly dependent, but I relied on an ordinary person. While it’s unlikely I once identified with the character, his portrayal still left an unexpected imprint on my self-perception.
