1. Ensure a solid foundation by deliberately crafting your core team for collective success.
With my dynamic co-founders by my side, we formed an unstoppable team. Despite this, I would have been equally accountable due to a flawed system that predominantly placed responsibility on my shoulders.
As sole owner of New Vitality Ventures (NEV), I employed Chris and Michael, whose work contributed significantly to the development of Orkestra’s intellectual property (IP).
I had initially envisioned Chris and Michael as co-founders when bringing the project together. Having consistently taken on the majority of risk up until then, it seemed only logical that I should maintain a controlling interest in Orkestra, with Chris and Michael holding smaller stakes.
As a former Managing Director of NEV, it followed naturally that I would take on the role of CEO at Orkestra.
Among the numerous factors that led to my exhaustion were these choices. I had essentially condemned myself and our entire operation to a high likelihood of collapse.
I had not established a suitable environment for Chris and Michael to seamlessly transition from employees to founders when structuring the Founder’s Cap desk with my significant stakeholding.
I was once deeply engaged and committed to my passions, far exceeding the level of enthusiasm displayed by others. As a direct result, I felt compelled to put in excessive hours and sacrifice my weekends, rather than striving for a more balanced distribution of professional and personal responsibilities.
In retrospect, had Chris been appointed as CEO in Orkestra’s formative years, his leadership would likely have yielded more favorable outcomes.
Prior to joining NEV, Chris had a track record of successfully leading multiple companies. With an innate affinity for startup ventures and products, he demonstrates a profound hunger to grasp the desires of target buyers, and harbors a bold, forward-thinking vision for our collective future. Having never actually run a “proper” startup, I’d always worked in supporting roles within corporations or as a marketing consultant.
While I successfully led a profitable administration consultancy, I initially lacked the necessary aptitude to become the CEO of SaaS start-up Orkestra in its early days. Chris was the obvious choice to lead from day one.
As the dust finally cleared, I returned to Orkestra and initiated a thorough redistribution of the cap desk, ensuring an unprecedented level of fairness. With Chris, we have also decided to co-lead Orkestra as Co-CEOs, allowing us to more effectively distribute the responsibilities of driving our organization forward. This determination has been wonderfully inspiring, one that I would wholeheartedly recommend to fellow entrepreneurs.
2. Effective leadership isn’t about shouldering all the responsibility yourself; instead, prioritize focus and empower others to share the load.
Making the leap from being an operator to managing a team is a daunting task. Startups inherently rely on strong individual performers to kick-start the venture. Since the company scales by hiring staff, its creators must become exceptionally adept at empowering others.
In a startup, it’s crucial to recognize when delegating tasks is more valuable than doing them yourself, even if you’re capable of completing the task quickly. As entrepreneurs, your ability to effectively delegate will be crucial to scaling your venture and achieving massive success.
Effective delegation involves distinguishing between “operational” and “foundational” tasks to optimize task allocation. That is the fundamental principle of marketing, rather than the product being marketed.
Here’s the improved text:
When tackling an operational process, consider this: each step you take is another opportunity to train your team and develop their skills. You will attract and retain top-performing operators when you provide them with opportunities to excel.
3. Cultivate a sense of calm within your inner sphere, focusing on what you can influence and control – the realm of your Circle of Influence. Let go of worries about external factors that lie beyond your reach, those that occupy your Circle of Concern. By prioritizing the former, you’ll find peace and clarity in the midst of life’s turbulence.
That is the primary behavior of Stephen Covey’s “The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People.” As the original guide has evolved over time, its relevance to contemporary issues has become increasingly evident. Being proactive means focusing on the problems that will directly impact your life and taking steps to tackle them head-on, while simultaneously ignoring distractions and irrelevant matters?
Ignoring irrelevant distractions, dismissing the din of social media, and focusing solely on the core message you’re communicating. Unless you derive genuine satisfaction or energize your business through consuming information or social media updates, stop if you’re unclear. It’s likely that you’ll feel significantly less perplexed and stressed immediately.
When I’m overwhelmed by mental clutter or struggling to make sense of things With numerous stressors present, I deliberately strive to convey the knowledge effectively.
4. Prioritize ruthlessly, maintaining focus through deliberate calendar planning, ensuring seamless execution of crucial tasks.
There exist countless challenges to overcome when establishing a fresh business venture. There are countless more problems, a staggering 100-fold in scale, that attempting to tackle them would likely prove a mere distraction, potentially squandering the precious hours and minutes of your day.
Prioritization techniques abound, with numerous approaches available. Discover what works for you. We establish tailored approaches on a quarterly basis for product-related initiatives and bi-annual frameworks for developmental endeavors.
Within our operational frameworks, we define specific objectives and pivotal strategic actions designed to achieve these goals as an organization. I consistently generate a customized task list that I update monthly, following which every Friday our team names the tasks we intend to tackle and realistically schedules dedicated time blocks in our calendars to complete them.
To maximize productivity, we will dedicate our most valuable and mentally demanding tasks to our core working hours – specifically, Monday afternoons and Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday mornings.
I avoid attending conferences before lunch unless they’re labeled as “co-creation” events. Shutting down excessive context switching, by default, proves arduously challenging to accomplish.
5. Cultivate acute self-attunement to gauge your mental well-being.
Following a tumultuous experience with mental wellness, I am acutely mindful of my emotional condition. Having mastered the ability to identify moments of confusion, I’ve developed the habit of acknowledging them, followed by a seamless release of tension and its underlying cause. This meditation technique is one I highly recommend embracing.
Can we challenge the assumption that confusion is a necessary state for learning or growth? A small amount of stress can have a positive impact, but it’s essential to recognize its usefulness.
While nothing quite sparks motivation like an impending deadline, the truth is that it’s generally best to avoid setting them unless absolutely essential to your marketing goals. When uncertainty becomes a persistent state, the ability to make thoughtful decisions gradually erodes until sound judgment is compromised altogether.
As you begin to tune into your inner self, I find that
6. Let the fires burn
While some organizations are embracing the cultural shift necessary for a successful Lean implementation, others may struggle to adapt. As a consultant with a background in company and administration, my perfectionistic tendencies left me unprepared for the cultural metamorphosis required at Orkestra. The constant pressure to perform fed directly into my growing sense of stress and anxiety.
To fully adopt Lean principles, you must willingly accept and learn from imperfections. When you’ve got a functional product, albeit riddled with defects and offering a subpar user experience, now’s the ideal moment to bring it to market. The sooner you transition from building a product to rigorously testing your assumptions, the better.
Coming to terms with the imperfections of your early prototype, including inevitable bugs and the possibility of facing embarrassment during a debut launch that may not quite meet your expectations.
Although our product is thoroughly refined, we still receive unique requests from each customer we interact with regarding their desired pet characteristics, even after purchase. Despite numerous pending tasks and responsibilities shared among various stakeholders, including prospects, companions, and employees, completing them remains a reality for any organization. To successfully navigate the complexities, a crystal-clear understanding of both enterprise and product strategies is essential, accompanied by relentless focus on high-priority objectives to avoid being drawn off-track by multiple competing demands.
So let the flames consume, allow the conflagration to rage.
7. Do not, under any circumstances, set foot in the office on Saturdays and Sundays.
With burnout looming just two weeks away, I was forced to put in a grueling weekend shift. I requested refinement of our go-to-market strategy from our primary investor and had previously committed to delivering a comprehensive presentation to our entire sales team serving our biggest client, a leading corporation. With no spare time during the week, I was forced to dedicate both tasks to the weekend.
Was the catalyst that propelled the project to new heights? I should never have worked at it. I should have, at the very least, fabricated a plausible excuse and called in sick to inform my client. At the time, it wasn’t quite a fib – but hardly the truth either!
There’s rarely any compelling reason to put in extra effort on the weekends unless you’re in dire need of a catastrophic failure.
8. Spend quality moments with loved ones: prioritize personal well-being and nurture relationships.
As a founder, you’re constantly inundated with data-driven decisions, forcing you to navigate the complexities of entrepreneurship. Spend a minimum of 30 minutes daily dedicating time to something that brings you genuine satisfaction, reserving at least two hours for personal indulgence on weekends.
If you’re part of a busy family with young children, as I am, taking time to recharge can be especially challenging; nonetheless, it’s crucial for nurturing mental space and allowing creative potential to flourish.
Combining this trip with a scenic train ride could be an excellent idea. I typically take a leisurely walk to the office, but I also make an effort to squeeze in an early morning ride on my mountain bike every Thursday before starting work.
Every weekend, I make sure to spend at least two hours cycling outdoors.
By reorganizing my schedule, I’ve managed to condense my workweek into an impressive 4.5 days, thanks to dedicated evening shifts following the kids’ bedtime and taking advantage of early Fridays off. This has labored wonders.
I’m significantly more productive throughout the week, and I’ve started treating Saturday mornings as a well-deserved break without feeling utterly exhausted.
Household appliances are designed to simplify our daily lives by performing routine tasks efficiently and effectively.
Isn’t sacrificing relationships with loved ones and friends to achieve success a steep price to pay?
In reality, make time for loved ones and invest in activities that bring you joy, ultimately generating a sense of empowerment. It’s insufficient to merely go through daily routines unilaterally.
9. Embrace the uncertainty of impermanence and find solace in the knowledge that every misstep holds the potential for growth.
Sorry to be the harbinger of perilous news, yet there exist
It’s not about being reckless with your investor’s capital. Acknowledging that, even when executing everything perfectly, failure remains a possibility, and that’s more than acceptable.
Isn’t that true? Failing to succeed will not waste the entirety of your potential for achievement. You’ll likely encounter various options and have gained valuable insights from challenging courses on how to improve your approach next time. This blog serves as a testament to this fact. Not that I had failed, but I’ve come close enough to realize how devastatingly close I was to complete collapse without actually hitting rock bottom?
Venture capitalists have openly revealed that they are more likely to invest in founders who have previously operated a startup that has failed. However, one must demonstrate a willingness to acknowledge past mistakes and learn from them, lest they remain stuck in a cycle of error.
There you’ll have it.
Here are your high nine suggestions for avoiding founder burnout:
Take care of your physical and mental health by prioritizing exercise, sleep, and relaxation techniques. By recounting my journey and insights with fellow entrepreneurs, I aim to spare myself the need to learn about mental wellness through trial and error, a costly process that comes with bearing the scars of numerous setbacks.
I strongly encourage our founders to share their personal stories of mental wellness with courage and vulnerability.
Through mutual storytelling, we learn significantly from each other’s experiences.
Should you be studying this, I’d appreciate your feedback, and perhaps together, we can incorporate a few more insights.
Good luck!

Are you and the enterprise recovering well?
Not to mention. After taking a three-month hiatus, I had to gradually rebuild my momentum within the organization over the next six months.
By that point, my hunger and mental acuity were at an all-time high. Burnout can be effectively alleviated by incorporating relaxation techniques into your daily routine.
Despite the indefinite pause in funding, the crew successfully maintained its presence on the highway? With a combination of free labor and paid consulting engagements, we successfully navigated the process of bootstrapping and remote code deployment.
Ultimately, after a seven-month closure, we successfully secured funding from the same lead investor who was eager to back our venture once more.
Since its inception, Orkestra has rapidly expanded to become the primary platform driving feasibility and generating significant sales for industrial renewable energy projects across Australia and New Zealand. As we prepare for our expansion into Europe,
