What’s your most listened-to genre? Are you tired of getting stuck in a loop of the same old playlists? Do you want to discover new artists and songs that resonate with your unique taste?

Spotify’s vast music database boasts an impressively nuanced classification system, featuring a rich array of parameters, markup, and categories that allow for precise categorization of songs at a highly granular level. The feature remains unexplored within the official app, he remarks. Despite its complex approach to music categorization, he contends that Spotify intentionally oversimplifies its vast library by focusing primarily on personalized playlists categorized broadly as “indie,” “rock,” or “celebration” genres, many of which feature predominantly mainstream artists and songs with which users are already familiar.

Through its API, Spotify reveals a vast array of microgenres, including obscure classifications like “reminimal” and “sky room”, which were previously hidden alongside bedroom pop and indie genres. By pinpointing genres that uniquely define an artist’s sonic identity, Unchartify aims to counteract the uncertainty caused by algorithmic recommendations.

Unchartify reorganizes Spotify’s vast database, departing from conventional wisdom by alphabetizing all genres and creating a map where each album serves as a node linking to a curated list of similar albums. Unlike Spotify’s “Followers also like” feature, which simply presents similar artists without explaining why they’re comparable, Unchartify offers a precise visual representation of where an album fits musically within its genre and peers.

Until explicitly asked, Unchartify does not attempt to infer what you are searching for. By providing you with the tools to navigate Spotify’s vast database efficiently, the platform allows you to browse through its extensive collection like searching through shelves in a public library. On-demand music’s reliance on Antenna’s platform highlights a crucial constraint on the digital landscape: As online content surges, its accessibility demands simplification, yet this simplification often sacrifices complexity.

Beating the algorithm

Here’s an improved version:

Building on Antenna’s innovative approach, this project takes a bold leap forward by abandoning traditional genre categorization and instead creates a sonic journey through time, randomly sequencing tracks to eliminate stylistic boundaries altogether.

Established in 2012 by a collective of four DJs, Radioooo painstakingly crafts a diverse playlist for each decade, spanning from the 1900s back to the present day, with a focus on global hits from every corner of the world. Customers are invited to discover music through time-based and geographically-rooted parameters, rather than traditional genre or artist categorizations – effectively upending the conventional streaming experience and fostering a fresh perspective on music. Radiooooo amplifies social engagement by acknowledging community members who locate the monitor, fostering connections through platforms like Music League and Oddly Particular Playlists, which cultivate a dynamic of collaborative discovery, inviting users to engage in lively debates and discussions – a stark contrast to Spotify’s goal of personalized, uninterrupted listening.

Perhaps we can break free from our algorithmic silos by fostering community connections and building neighborhoods of diverse perspectives? As we navigate diverse patterns of music consumption, we’re compelled to reframe our understanding of music through novel perspectives, much like unbiased radio stations that craft narratives rather than catering to specific demographics? Nothing could be more misleading than suggesting there’s nothing to optimise or oversimplify in a neighbourhood.

Despite diverging from Spotify’s core ethos, platforms like RadiooooMusic League, Oddly Particular Playlists, and unbiased radio stations harmonize with its overall purpose. By serving as a catalyst for our exploratory endeavors, these platforms provide a crucial stepping stone beyond Spotify’s emphasis on personalization, guiding us toward new discoveries while prioritizing an enjoyable experience.

McDonald draws a parallel between Spotify’s functionalities and Google Maps’ navigational prowess. Although Google Maps doesn’t provide a personalized experience, it’s still a valuable tool when navigating to a specific destination. Rather than leading us on predetermined tours, it provides the tools for us to chart our own course and explore uncharted territory. Because it showcases our surroundings, providing directions on how to reach nearby destinations, and highlights notable landmarks previously visited by others, Spotify enables seamless access to a vast music library, tracks global listening trends, and introduces users to new artists similar to those they already enjoy. Regardless of where we choose to dwell while on vacation, communities are what truly make a destination special; and Spotify can aid us in discovering these hidden gems.

Rage towards the machine

Music lovers rejoice! If you’re tired of Spotify’s AI-generated playlists being too generic or predictable, there are four music discovery providers that’ll revolutionize your musical experience.

Music League is a web-based platform that empowers customers to submit songs that align with a specific theme.
